Processional Deities of Sri Veera Raghava Swamy.

Introduction.

Sri Veeraraghava Swamy is the name of the presiding deity Maha Vishnu .He is in a reclining form.

His right hand is resting on Salihotra rishi who is said to have performed severe tapas [meditation] in this very place in ancient times and was rewarded with Vishnu appearing before him who allowed himself to be enshrined in here.

More than 1000 years back two SriVaishnavaite saints Thirumizhai azhwar and Thirumangai aazhwar visited this place to pay their obeisance toSri Veeraraghava Swamy .They have dedicated 12 Pasurams/hymns to the reigning deity .

This place and temple is regarded as Divya desam .Divya Desams are temples that have been visited by one or more out of the 12 Srivaishnavaite saints known as azhwars.They have left behind poetic hymns soaked in devotion to Sriman Narayana /Vishnu and on his avatars.Azhwars dedicate thier pasurams in general to Sriman Narayana and in particular to the presiding deity of the temple.The presiding deity is always Vishnu but hailed by different sacred names in each and every temple of Divya Desams.

An unique feature of the main deity or Moolavar of this temple is that he is covered by a red checked bedsheet upto his chest.

There is a strong belief associated with Sri Veeraraghavar .who is also known as Vaidya Veeraraghavar is that he is capable of curing any disease if the afflicted person takes bath in the pushkarni[temple tank] on a new moon day before paying obeisance to Sri Veeraraghavar..This ritual has to be performed without a break for certain specified number of times on succeeding new moon days to be cured of the disease or pain or illness.

A famous Saivaite saint Thirumoolar is said to have been cured of his stomach ailment after performing the ritual of bathing in pushkarni on new moon days before worshipping Sri Veeraraghavar at the temple.

He has also written verses in praise . of Sri Veeraraghavar

Thirumizhai azhwar who belongs to 5 th cent AD and Thirumangai azhwar to 9 th cent AD have dedicated one and eleven pasurams each on Sri Veeraraghavar.

வாழி குறையுலூர் வாழ்வேந்தன் !-வாழியரோ
மாயோனை வாள்வலியால் மந்திரம்கொள் ,மங்கைர்கோன்
தூயோன் சுடர்மான வேல் .

Vaazhi Parakaalan , vaazhi kalikandri,

vaazhi kuraiuloor vaazhvendhan!-vaazhiyaro,

mayonai vaalvaliyaal mandiram kol mangairkon

thuyon sudarmaan vel.

Meaning--Long live Parakalan.

Long live the king who lives in Kuraiyuloor!

He is capable of dispelling mishaps caused by Time,

Long live the leader of people of Tirumangai!

He obtained the sacred mantra from Narayana the bhagwan with amazing qualities,by showing Him, his skillful swordsmanship .

Long live this pure Azhwar 's Lance bearing army!

**.கசையாடை மூடியோடிக் காதல் செய்தானவனுர்
நாசமாக நம்பவல்ல நம்பி நம் பெருமான்
வேயினன்ன தோள் மடவார் வெண்ணெயுண்டான் இவனென்று
ஏசநின்ற எம்பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

Pasuram -1

1**Kaasai adai moodi yodi kaadal seiddhanavanoor nasamaaga nambhavalla nambi nam Peruman veiyinan nambhavalla thol madavaar vennaiundaan ivanendru .

Yesa nindra emperuman yevvul kidanthane

Covering his body with saffron robes and disguising himself as a sanyasi , the lustful Ravana abducted Sita by tricking her to believe that he was a sanyasi seeking alms .

He as well as Lanka was totally annihilated by Rama our brave leader who is capable of achieving all His goals . Sriman Naryana who took this avatar is reclining at Thiruvallur.

Krishna who has bamboo like shoulders and who was castigated as butter thief by Gopikas is also reclining as SrimanNaryana at Thiruyevull.

பொய்யிலாத பொன்முடிகள் ஒன்பதோடொன்றும் அன்று
செய்த வெம்போர் தன்னில் அங்கு ஓர் செஞ்சரத்தால் உருள

Thaiyalal mel kadhal seidha danavan vaalarakan poiyilladha ponmudigal onbhathodu ondrum andru

Seidha vempor thannil angu vor senjarathaal urulla yeidha yendahi emperuman yevul kidanthane.

Due to his lust for the beautiful form of Sita , Ravana the Rakshas who carried a sword and who had abducted Sita was killed by Rama in a bitter war.

Rama, who severed all the ten heads of Ravana with a single arrow that became stained with Ravana's red blood and made them fall down, Is my father and my leader.Sriman Naryana .He is reclining at Thiruyevull

Pasuram 3.

முன் ஓர் தூது வானரத்தின் வாயில் மொழிந்து அரக்கன்
மன்னூர் தன்னை வாயினால் மாள முனிந்து அவனே ,
பின் ஓர் தூது ஆதி மன்னர்க்காகி பெரு நிலத்தார்
இன்னார் தூதனென நின்றான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

**Mun vor thoodhu vanarathin vayil mozhindha arakkan mannoor thanai vayinaal mallamunindha avanae pin,

Vor thoodhu aadhi mannarkagi ,peru nillathar innaar thoodhuyena nindraan yevull kidanthane.

Sriman Narayana when he assumed the avatar of Rama sent Hanuman as his envoy to the Rakshas[Ravana] and later destroyed both Ravana and Lanka with his arrows.

In a later period when he took the avatar as Krishna he himself went as messenger of Pandavas and came to be popularily known as Pandava's envoy.

Sriman Narayana who combines both the avatars is reclining at Thruyevull.

Pasuram 4.

    பந்தணைந்து மெல்விரலாள் பாவை தன் காரணத்தால் ,
    வென்திறலேறேழும் வென்றவேந்தன் விரிபுகழ்சேர்
    நந்தன் மைந்தனாகவும் நம்பி நம் பெருமான் ,
    எந்தை தந்தை தம் பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

My leader Sriman Narayana who is full of auspicious qualities and who was the son of Nandagopan destroyed seven bulls to seek the slender and soft hands of Nappinai.

Sriman Narayana who is the leader of my clan and also the leader of of my ancestors like my father and father's father and so on is reclining at Thiruyevull .

பாலனாகி ஞாலமேழும் உண்டு பண்டு ஆலிலைமேல்
சால நாளும் பள்ளி கொள்ளும் தாமரை கண்ணன் ,எண்ணில்
நீலமார் வண்டுண்டு வாழும் நெய்தலந்தண் கழனி
ஏல நாறும் பைம்புறவில் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

**Balanagai gyalam yezhumundu pandu allilaimel sala nallum palli kollum thamarai kannan, yennil eneelamaar vandundu vazhum neithalathun kazhani yelanaarumm paimpuravil yevull kidanthan.

The lotus eyed Sri Krishna who swallowed all the seven worlds during the end of the great deluge in the distant past and lay as a infant on a banyan leaf for a long period of time ,is reclining in Thiruyevull where blue coloured bees flit living on nectar found in the flowers growing in the fragrant gardens and fertile fields therein.

சோத்த நம்பியென்று தொண்டர்மிண்டித் தொடர்ந்து தழைக்கும்
ஆத்தன்நம்பி செங்கணம்பி ஆகிலும் தேவர்க்கெல்லாம்
மூத்த நம்பி முக்கணம்பி என்று முனிவர் தொழுது
ஏத்தும் நம்பி எம்பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

**Sotha nambhi yendru thondarmindi thodarandhuazhaikum aathan nambi senagnambi aagilum devarkellam motha nambhi mukkannambi yendru munivar thozhudhu yetthamnambi Emperuman yevull kindanthane.

Vaishnavaites gather in large numbers and constantly worship Sriman Narayana by chanting slokas which enumerate all his auspicious qualities and show their reverence with folded hands .

He is a leader without any faults.

He has delicate and gentle eyes that are laced in red .He is the indweller of Brahma and Siva .

He is revered by Rishi's like Sanaka .

He is reclining at Tiruyevvul.

திங்களப்பு வானெரி காலாகி திசை முகனார்
தங்களப்பன் சாமியப்பன் பாகத்திருந்த வண்டுண்
தொங்கலப்பு நீள்முடியான் சூழ்கடல் சூட நின்ற
எங்களப்பன் எம்பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

**Thingalppu vanerikaalagi disaimugannar thangallapan samiappan pagathirundhu vandun thongallapa neelmudiyaan soozh kadal chooda nindra yengallappan Emberuman yevull kidanthane.

He has for his body ,the moon,the water ,sky ,fire and wind,

He is the father of four faced Brahma

He is the primeival and foremost leader as explained in Samaveda .

He has Siva as one half of his body .

Siva's matted locks are purified by Deva Ganga falling on them, who rose from the abhisekam of the sacred feet of Naryana as Trivikrama avatar that measured the worlds, which was performed by Brahma when one of His [Narayana's]sacred feet reached Satya loka- the abode of Brahma.

Our father and leader Sriman Narayana is reclining at Thiruyevull.

முனிவன் முர்த்தி மூவராகி வேதம் விரித்துரைத்து
புனிதன் பூவை வண்ணன் அண்ணல் புண்ணியன் விண்ணவர்கோன்
தனியன் சேயன் தானொரு வனாகிலும் தன்னடியார்க்கு
இனியன் எந்தை எம்பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே .

**Munivan moorthy moovaragi vedam virithuraithu punidhan poovai vannan annal punnian vinnavarkon thaniyan seiyan thaanoruvanagilum thun adiyarikku iniyan yendai Emberuman yevull kidanthane.

He is the creator.He is Trimurti -Brahma,Vishnu and Siva .Being friends of all he has revealed clearly the inner and special meanings of Vedas.

He is dusky hued and is the leader of all .He is personification of all virtues .He is the leader of all Mukthas.

He is the only one and is beyond comparison

He maynot even be known to those who perform severe tapas but is pleasant and benevolent to those who worship him in all humility.

பந்திருக்கும் மெல்விரலாள் பாவை பனி மலராள்
வந்திருக்கும் மார்வன் நீலமேனி மணிவண்ணன்
அந்தரத்தில் வாழும் வானோர் நாயகனாய் மைந்த
இந்திரற்கும் தம்பெருமான் எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானே

**Pandhirukkum melviralaall pavai pani malaraal vandhirukum maarvan neelameni Manivannan andharathil vazhum vaanor nayaganai maindha Indirarkkum thumperuman yevull kidanthane.

The soft and slender fingered Mahalakhmi has left her residence , the pleasant lotus flower and has taken permanent residence in his chest.

He is blue hued like blue sapphire.

He is the leader of all devas living in the heaven and is also the leader of Indra .

He is Sriman Narayana who is reclining in Thiruyevull .

இண்டை கொண்டு தொண்டரேத்த எவ்வுள் கிடந்தானை
வண்டு பாடும் பைம்புறவின் மங்கையர்கோன் கலியன்
கொண்ட சீரால் தண் தமிழ் மாலை ஈரைந்தும் வல்லார்
அண்டம் ஆள்வது ஆணை அன்றேல் ஆள்வார் அமருலகே .

**Indai kondu thondarethu yevull kidanthanai vandu padum paimpuravin mangaiyarkon Kaliyan konda seeral thun thamizh malai yeeraindhum vallaar anda maalvadhu aanai anrel aalvaar amarulage.

Kaliyan the leader of Thirumangai country where bees hum in the gardens has written the above 10 pasurams on Sriman Naryana who is reclining at Thiruyevul who.is worshipped by devotees with garlands of flowers.

All those who recite all the 10 pasurams are assured of ruling all the worlds .

All those who reject the above fruit [viz of reigning over all worlds] of reciting these garlands made out of beautiful Tamizh , inter alia are assured of a place in Vaikuntum and will rule over Muktas and Nitya soories.

The valiant consort of Mahalakhmi , the goddess who resides in a lotus and has a waist like a flash of lightening has condensed himself as a golden mountain at Vinnagaram.

This warrior is reclining in Kudanthai on the banks of river Kaveri which bestows gold and wealth.

In south he has risen as a red corral hill in Kurungudi.

This philantropist has risen to bless all in the cool environs of Cherai .

He has risen in Thiruvaali , a place which is cool and full of ponds and lakes in which swans doze in lotuses blooming therein

He who is very close very dear and sweet to me is reclining as a huge hill at Thiruyevul .

He has also risen in Kannamangai which is sorrounded by huge compound walls .He has risen in the hill of Vellarai as bright as lightening, sun and moon .

He is adored by all

This war lord has condensed himself as a emerald in Thirupaatkuzhi

He who has risen as a huge jewel to bless us all at Sri Rangam , is beloved to me
