Inclusion of Chennai in creative city networks by UNESCO.
I am not much of a Carnatic music lover but more interested in dance performances in its classical forms with a special .liking to Bhartanatyam. In the last Kutcheri season i gorged myself with a number of dance performances .Most of the artists were performing the same theme viz popular stories from Hindu mythology yet each presented them in with a individual style without transgressing the traditional dance steps and hand movements and facial expressions.Hence the repeat themes were not boring at all .I felt none of that cynicism that some complain that if you have seen one performance you have seen it all.
The dance artists dedication and professionalism is highly praiseworthy. They didn't falter or be miserly in their performances even in those times when the audience was just a handful .
Regarding Carnatic music it is not like as if they are rendered in auditoriums and listened to only during the December Kutcheri festivals .They take place all year around in auditoriums, schools and marriage halls. There are music buffs who have attended them each and every evening for the past decade or more .
To hold musical kutcheris every single day in at least four venues with a host of musical artists rendering music with utmost sincerity the whole year around for past 10 to 15 years, though several of them could be attended sparsely is no mean achievment.
It is a fantastic expression of respect and deep love for tradition , culture and religion .All Carnatic songs revolve only and only over Bhakthi or deep devotion to Hindu gods of all sects and each artist has his own style which bespeaks of creativity..
It is befitting of unesco to recognise this.rich cultural tradition.
