Devaprayag---ThiruKandangadi [ the ancient name]

Peryaazhwar has visited Devaprayag and has sung 10 verses in praise of the reigning deity Puroshatama Rama and has also described the place .The following verse captures the roar of Ganges at the tumultuous meeting of Alkananda and Bhaghirathi rivers at the confluence at Devaprayag, that I heard and saw on my visit last year . More than a thousand years have elapsed since Peryaazhwaar visited this place yet the raging and frothing of the waters of the rivers is just as he has described!

399.Northern Madurai[Mathura] , Saligram, Vaikuntam, Dwaraka , Ayodhya and Badrinath are the places where my Purushothaman is enshrined!

He is also enshrined in the place where Ganga flows rapidly overturning boulders and breaking them to pieces and roars over tree tops in her banks on her tumultuous way ,even agitating the sea ,into which she eventually merges!

This place is the picturesque town of Kandam!

Two other hymns are---

392.Salampodhi udambin thazhalumizh pezhvaai chandiran vengathiranju,
Malar thezhuinthanavi manivannuruvin maal Purutothaman vazhvu,
nalanthigazh sadaiyan mudi kondrai malarum naranan padathuzhayum,
kalanthizhi punalal pugar padu Gangai kanda mennum kadi nagar!

My swami grew to great heights whilst measuring the 3 worlds,

Scaring even the eternals like the pleasant moon and the fiery raging sun!

Thirumal is residing as the sapphire hued Purushothama at the beautiful place ,

Where the green and cool tulsi leaves adorning Vishnu and the golden coloured kondrai flowers adorning Siva have combined to give life and lustre to Ganga,

Whose pure waters surrounds the picturesque place called Kandam!

391. The picturesque town of kandam is on the bank of the river, that is in hands reach,

Whose name even when uttered casually is capable of removing the harsh consequences of deeds done'

Ganga ! Ganga!

Thirumozhi--[4-10-7] 391---401.

On top the temple of Purushothama right above the confluence of Alkananda and Bhagirathi, slightly hidden by trees.Down --the merging of the two rivers into one as Ganges.
